Also there is El Olivio, a bit pricey but lovely paella. We got the rabbit paella.

Yes both great..
I would recommend Matola more for family's and kids and El Olvio if just adults.
-
Me personally found the bodega which is by the Alicante bus stop where the old pharmacy
used to be, also wine very good.

I second El Olivio (and outside, is in my opinion fine for kids - hey so's inside really, this is Spain) but would add https://www.facebook.com/latabernadelucia to the mix. I have various recommendation in Alicante, but this place is great in Santa Pola, and has a fantastic location for pre/post lunch stroll. (And please, please remember paella is not for dinner!) :)

Yes of course kids are fine in El Olivo. We just found Matola a bit less formal with more choice for the kids.
Also personally I don't like the outside of El Olivo, It like sitting in a corridor ;)

Agreed on both counts, although improved with the fancy glass screens.

Thanks for all the replies,Matola sounds like the one to try first.

Snipes in Arenales is the best but expensive and need to book as so popular, however cannot beat for value Bella Vista in Arenales as their Menu del Dia (12 Euros including drink and salad starter) come with a paellla starter if you desire. Great choice on menu del Dia but can just order Paella cooked fresh.

I think that the best paella is in the resto The Costa Hispania, far far better than the paella in Matola, which last time we went there was served cold ! ::)

I'm not blowing my Mrs trumpet but boy of boy, she makes a brilliant paella.
She uses a mix of spices she buys in Santa Pola market, it's very good, only €1.50 a jar and sufficient for around 5 paellas, it's that good she alway brings a few jars home.
We've bought a few different ones from various shops, this is the best by far.
It's from the lady who sells all the herbs.

We were sat outside Barloko this afternoon and 3 huge paella's went out as takeaways - we could see inside the kitchen and in total 11 paella's were cooked in about 2 hours
