When we arrived at our house after dark I turned the two water valves on either side of the meter and got a face full of water as one valve was stiff it turned out I was unscrewing the valve from its body, retightening with an adjustable spanner put it right. A few days later water appeared in the kitchen work surface under the electric water boiler, turns out where the hot outlet flexi hose connects to the boiler there is a plastic threaded fitting which had deteriorated and was powdery, I managed to remove it and with some PTFE tape fit the brass fitting below the plastic one straight onto the threaded outlet pipe on the boiler, the plastic fitting wasn't needed in the first place. So both jobs didn't cost me a cent, makes a pleasant change.
