Hello Dottie
Welcome to the forum.
Not sure about deals, but I do know you need to show photo id if buying a sim from a shop.

Hi Dottie, years ago I bought a cheap mobile to use in Spain, it was a PAYG with Movistar
I don't know if it was unique to the Movistar SIM I got or something that was the norm in Spain but any credit I put on the phone only lasted for six months, it was than deleted.
The only way I could stop this happening was to top up again within the six months.
Because I don't use mobiles that much it was much cheaper to use my English mobile to make the occasional call.

Regards all

John

Hello Dottie,I have got a Spanish payg sim with orange.I rarely use it now because both myself & my wife are on a three sim .we can use our three phones abroad without any roaming charges. You can get a three sim for £8.00 a month &a it will give you 200 mins 500 mbs of Internet & unlimited texts to any network with no extra charge when abroad. Also you get 2000 mins to use to call anybody else with a 3 sim .

We have had an orange sim PAYG for a few years and very useful for ringing taxis, restaurants etc. Also if you want local tradesmen or deliveries they normally want a local number if you want a call .Cheap and just top up at any ATM.

We have a pay as you go with moviestar had it for years no problem as John says you have to top up every 6months or loose your number We don't have
a problem as we are usually over within the time
As Chris and Jackie says most shops and businesses prefer you to have a Spanish mobile or land line

We had a Spanish sim and had problems when we didn't top up. Now we use a UK Virgin sim which has the same call rates    as the UK, including making and receiving calls for £5 per month on contract.

We don't normally use mobile phones in the UK but we keep one in the car in case of emergency.  In Spain, like others have said we have a Movistar paygo phone and just use it to contact businesses or in case of emergency.  The only snag is that it cannot be topped-up online in the UK.  Their web site does not allow it.  We email our keyholder who tops it up at the ATM.  At 10 euro per year we consider it good value.

I used to have a Spanish Vodafone PAYG but forgot to top it up last year and it self-destructed. I don't bother now and use a "3" PAYG 3,2,1 SIM. 3p per minute for a call, 2p per text, 1p per Mb. Covers a lot of European countries. Obviously less pertinent to permanent GA residents.

The 0/mes are the PAYG.
