I can only assume that whoever authorised the initial work has never even built a sand castle

It was obvious to anybody with any basic knowledge of building that none of his structure was salvageable, the decades of neglect had left this structure both dangerous and unsalvageable.

I refuse to believe that Elche Council building department were innocent in all this and the construction company certainly knew that the whole structure would have to be demolished.

Surely the ideal plan would be to demolish it and build the hotel that was planned for there.

Yes I know the new regulations have an impact on this but surely anyone with an ounce of sense would see that what we have now and have had for the last 40-50 years is a total eyesore.

Not so devious as back handers, i think spain is just culturally corrupt, the rules are for others to adhere too. I remember the first property we ever bought, i got fed up of hearing "this is the way we do it in spain".
They dont like it up em !

Fully agree Ash - the building was completely shot - you could see that.

As I posted some months ago the reason why they (pretended) that they were re-furbishing it was because they would never have got planning permission to build a new hotel from scratch.

So they tried to hide the extent of the work required and in trying to find some sound structure to build on ended up with nothing being viable in the whole building.

They then got rumbled on how little (as in none) of the original building would be used.

Completely corrupt or inept - you take your choice. The most basic of surveys before it started would have shown all of this - but they couldn't be arsed to do that or if they did they ignored it

Hope they make the builder accountable for cleaning up the site properly

Another pathetic decision! I love this country but hell it can drive you mad! There was an eyesore in place that nobody could afford to remove. Solution, let somebody reinstate it and provide the accommodation that had been there previously. Result - a great bit of regeneration for a lovely area and some nice turnover for the local bars and restaurants. However, we now have an eyesore worse than the original.....that no doubt will remain for years! Use some damn logic!

Bloody eyesore I don't think it will stay there for years when I drove past the other day it looked like it will be lucky to survive the winter..

It must be dangerous enough by now for the authorities to have to step in a demolish it before someone gets hurt or worse

Big sign put up outside it the other day. Seems like it's going to be demolished soon.

I reckon if they had built it it wouldn't have taken many years for it to have ended up being abandoned and left to decay......the process has just been shortened by 20 years
